Tree marking Gemma's fatal crash Tree marking Gemma's fatal crash

The Tree is a reoccurring symbol in Severance.

For Mark, the tree represents his grief and love for his late wife, Gemma. It is believed that Gemma died tragically in a car collision involving a tree approximately two years ago.[1] Mark visits the tree to grieve for Gemma, memorialized with a tattered piece of caution tape tied around the trunk.[2]

During a wellness session, Ms. Casey offers Mark the opportunity to sculpt his feelings in clay, and Mark sculpts a tree not unlike the one involved in Gemma's fatal car crash. Notably, Gemma's candle is lit on the table during this session.[3]
